Pang-yuan Chi 齊邦媛is professor emeritus at NTU’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. She edited the multi-volume series Zhongguo Xiandai Wenxue Xuanji (An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Literature), served as the editor-in-chief for the Taipei Chinese P.E.N. Centre (an important juncture in her career), made works of Taiwan literature widely more accessible to a foreign audience by her translation efforts and significantly increased the international visibility of Taiwan literature during the era of the Cold War.

With the inauguration of the institute, it was Professor Pang-yuan Chi’s initiative—with Professor Ching-ming Ko 柯慶明 bringing his connections to bear as well—to donate her large personal collection of books to the institute, thus laying the foundation for the then established Pang-yuan Chi Library.

The origin and cause of the Pang-yuan Chi Library is emblematic for the canonization of the study of Taiwan literature. Aside from the donations by Professor Pang-yuan Chi over the years, the library’s collection includes volumes of books and teaching materials from Professor Ching-ming Ko, Professor Wen-yueh Lin 林文月, Professor Han-liang Chang 張漢良, Professor Hsing-ching Hsu 徐興慶 and Professor Karen Steffen Chung 史嘉琳 as well as several donations from Hsiang Ming 向明, Songfen Guo 郭松棻, Li Yu 李渝, Lai An 賴洝 and all the other dear friends of the institute. The library also holds various manuscripts which can be put on display for relevant purposes.
